Women's ACHA Showcase Set For Nov. 14-16
2010-11-03
ROBERT MORRIS-IL TO HOST ANNUAL EVENT FEATURING EIGHT OF THE 18 ACHA W1 TEAMS.
The 2010 Robert Morris/ACHA Women’s Division 1 Showcase is set for November 12-14, 2010 at Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville, Ill. The Edge is no stranger to major ACHA events, having been the venue for the 2005 and 2010 M1 ACHA National Tournaments.
Robert Morris-IL, which annually hosts its own
tournament, will be hosting the Women’s Division 1 Showcase in lieu of
its event this year. The 2010 Showcase will
feature eight of the 18 women’s Division 1 teams in a tournament set-up,
rather than a round-robin set-up. This means by Sunday there will be a tournament champion crowned. Included
in the Showcase, besides Robert Morris-IL, will be three-time
defending W1 national champion Lindenwood and 2010 runner-up Michigan
State.
The 16-game event will be split among the three sheets of ice at The Edge and the schedule is listed below:

UB HANDLES NEW YORK STATE CHAMPION WHEATFIELD BLADES 4-1
UB faced the 2010 New York Senior "B" State Champions Thursday night at Northtown Center at Amherst. The two teams have turned into a bit of a local rival facing each other many times over the past three years and have always been pretty evenly matched games. Tonight was UB's night though handling the Blades 4-1. UB controlled the game from the start. Fallon Waxman scored first for UB on a nice pass from Lauren Leeson on the power play. Katie Wrona added the next two goals. The first turned out to be the game winner and the second on the power play controlling the front of the net knocking in a rebound from Kathryn Pecora on Katelyn Bothwell's pass. Wheatfield added a goal in the third to spoil the shut out for UB. AJ Sliwinski and Laura Hanzly split the game in goal and both played well between the pipes.Coach Rosen said after the game "We are only one game under the .500 mark now (3-4) and we have some momentum going into the ACHA D1 showcase tournament next week were we will be playing against two of the strongest teams we have ever faced, you girls are ready to go!"

UB's OFFENSE EXPLODES ON NIAGARA 11-2
UB snapped a four game losing streak Friday night on the road against the Niagara University Purple Eagles (club team) 11-2. The teams offense had struggled a bit during the four game losing streak but they had it together tonight and let their frustrations out on Niagara scoring six unanswered goals at one point and five more at another. All three UB goalies played in the game with Autumn Stevens and Laura Hanzly splitting most of the game. But UB's offense was the story tonight. Freshman Fallon Waxman started the scoring for UB six minutes into the game and finished the game with two goals and one assist. Katelyn Bothwell lead the team with a hat trick and finished the game with 4 points. Freshman Katie Wrona also added 2 more goals and had 3 points. Other players with strong nights on the score sheet where Lauren Leeson 1 goal and 2 assists, Kathryn Pecora 1 goal and 2 assists, Tiffany Vinette with a goal and an assist and Sho Levine with a goal and an assist. Assistant Captain Chelsea Eppolito lead the blue line crew with Alison Edwards and Katie Pierce keeping the puck out of UB's defensive zone all night. Amanda Harris and Jaz Marcucci controlled the boards all night to round out the Lady Ice Bulls full team effort to break the losing streak.

HOME OPENING WEEKEND FACES BIGGEST RIVAL PENN STATE
UB had their home opener spoiled by their biggest rival #6 Penn State over Alumni weekend. It was alumni weekend and following the Alumni game with many alumni attending UB got their ACHA season started. There is no love loss between these two teams over the years. This goes all the way back to 2001 when there was a bench clearing brawl at Penn State that made national headlines. When the 2010 game started UB came out swinging playing solid hockey on offense and defense and took the lead early in the second period when Jenn Hill scored for UB. Penn State answered back late in the second to tie it up 1-1. The third period remained tied late with both teams playing tight defense, but Penn State broke things open scoring two goals late to win 3-1. Junior AJ Sliwinski made 36 saves in the losing effort and was unbeatable for most of the game.
Sundays game was almost a carbon copy of Saturdays game. Both teams playing very sound fundamental hockey. Penn State got on the board first though but UB came right back on a great goal by Katelyn Bothwell. She was set up by two great passes from Lauren Leeson and Tiffany Vinette who both assisted on the goal.. Penn State added another goal at the end of the first period to go up 2-1. That is the way the score stayed through another period and a half until Penn State broke it open again late in the third adding their third goal and an empty net goal to spoil UB's weekend 4-1. Coach Rosen said after the game "This is one of those times were you cannot be upset about the way your team played. We played great all weekend against one of the top teams in the country and we just ran out of gas in the third period in both games trying to run a short bench vs. Penn States four full lines. I am proud of everyone!"

Annual Alumni Game And "Blood-fest" Kicks Off Opening Weekend

Founders and Alumni of UB Womens Hockey
Over a decade of UB women’s hockey players ranging from age 24 all the
way up to 40 came together over the weekend to celebrate in the annual "Blood-fest". This year the event was expanded upon to include not only an
Alumni versus Alumni grudge
match but a pregame party the night before as well as an after game
gathering to cheer on the current team while they battled long time
rival Penn State. A good showing of support provided by Alumni scattered
throughout NY, CT, IL, and PA made for a great
weekend. The alumni game itself was dominated by former Head Coach Jim Henry’s team but
the highlight of the game was probably the time between the periods;
when all the ladies instinctively looked up to the stands to find and
wave to their children. After the game the cowbells
were released and some hearty cheering for the UB team ensued! It was a
great game and only late in the third did Penn State grab the lead...
The after party took place at the old Hemmingway’s in downtown Buffalo, where some
much needed reminiscing and catching up took
place. Alumni Weekend 2010 was a lot of fun and we are all looking
forward to next year and hope to expand on this years success. If you are a former UB player you can contact Jess Boudreau at jboudreau@gpinet.com or Anna Kusche kusche2@aol.com to get involved.

UB Visits Division 2 National Champion Northeastern University

UB coaches and players visit Fenway Park on a team bonding trip while visiting Boston.
UB dropped two games over the weekend to Division 2 defending National Champion Northeastern. Saturdays game was played tight and both teams focused on defense and played conservative through the first period with UB keeping it close. Then in the second period Northeastern got things going and scored three unanswered goals to end the second period. The short bench UB was running started to catch up to them in the third period when Northeastern played all out scoring two times in the third to win their first D1 game 5-0. UB goaltender AJ Sliwinski made 68 saves and was the teams first star. Sundays game again saw a high powered offense from Northeastern take advantage of a flat UB team that only saw freshman Fallon Waxman scoring the lone UB goal on a nice pass from freshman Alison Edwards in the 8-1 defeat.

Season Opener
The UB Lady Ice Bulls started out their season on a winning note beating local rival Niagara University 2-0 at Dwyer Arena in Niagara. Goalies A.J. Sliwinski, Autumn Stevens, and newcomer Laura Hanzley split up the shut out three ways. The Lady Ice Bulls dominated the offensive zone all night out shooting Niagara 40-10. Forwards Captain Katelyn Bothwell got the first goal of the year halfway through the first period and it turned out to be the game winner. Freshman Fallon Waxman added the Ice Bulls second goal of the night on a dazzling play to go top shelf and beat the stunned Niagara goaltender. UB and Niagara will meet three times this season including another game October 22nd at Dwyer Arena and then again on February 4th for a special event night at the Ice Bulls home the Northtown Center at Amherst.

Season Preview
The UB Lady Ice Bulls took to the ice for their first practice of the year today. Hopes are high this season after such a successful 2009-2010 season. The team set a record for team wins with 10 last season and finished ranked 13th in the country, along with a surprise runner up finish in the 2010 ECWHL playoffs. In 2010-2011 the team will be facing one of the toughest schedules the team has ever faced. They will be facing their usual ECWHL rivals (Penn State, Rhode Island, and University of Massachusetts) but also several other women's hockey powerhouses. They open their ACHA season against defending Division 2 National Champion Northeastern University in Boston in October. In November it does not get any easier when they will be going to the ACHA National Division 1 Showcase Tournament in Chicago where they will have to face three time defending National Champion Lindenwood University and last years national semi-finalist Robert Morris University.
The Lady Ice Bulls do have some new faces for help though. To bolster the offense they have added a new offensive coach Melissa Jeckovich. Jeckovich joins Coach Rosen's staff after an impressive NCAA hockey career at Buffalo State College and should help get the offense going. Five new players were also added to the lineup all coming from solid hockey organizations. Former Long Island Lady Icer and freshman Fallon Waxman will add a lot of speed to the center position for UB. More speed was added when UB added Empire State gold medal winner Jasmine Marcucci from the Wheatfield Blades as another new center. The team then added some muscle and versatility recruiting freshman Katie Wrona from the New England Junior Falcons. Katie will be a strong asset as she can play forward and defense as well special teams. UB then filled some defensive holes left last year with some departing players when they added local Williamsville North and former Wheatfield Blade Katie Pierce. The last big recruit was a speedy talented defensemen. Freshman Alison Edwards coming from the Cornwall Ontario Typoons was a huge addition to the team. At only 18 years old the Ogdensburg, New York native rounds out the list of impressive newcomers and will give Lady Ice Bull fans something to be really excited about for years to come.
